What is qualitative research? We define qualitative research as an iterative process in which improved understanding to the scientific community is achieved by making new significant distinctions resulting from getting closer to the phenomenon studied. This formulation is developed as a tool to help improve research designs while stressing that a qualitative dimension is present in quantitative work as well. Additionally, it can facilitate teaching, communication between researchers, diminish the gap between qualitative and quantitative researchers, help to address critiques of qualitative methods, and be used as a standard of evaluation of qualitative research.

This chapter discusses the grounded theory method and its evolution over sixty years since sociologists Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss put forth their original statement of the method. They presented grounded theory as consisting of flexible, successive analytic strategies to construct inductive theories from the data. Over the past few decades, many qualitative psychologists have adopted grounded theory, as we outline below.

We draw on developments in diverse sub-fields of psychology, interdisciplinary research, to which psychologists contribute, and selected contributions from key grounded theory researchers and researcher-practitioners within allied health and social disciplines. While our chapter is targeted at issues customarily discussed about a particular methodology Show page numbers Download PDF.

After completing my first degree in psychology I trained and practiced clinically as an audiological scientist testing and rehabilitating people with hearing and balance difficulties , before moving back into psychology to undertake a PhD. The main effect of this is to make me appear very rude when I fail to recognise people I have met, so please say Hello when you meet me - I will remember you and our previous meeting, just not your face! Paul Marc Camic. This book brings together a diverse group of scholars who share valuable qualitative research techniques and rich case examples. Qualitative methodologies and the paradigms that guide them can be seen as both an alternative and a complementary approach to quantification and positivism in social, personality, developmental, health, clinical, counseling, community, and school psychology. Qualitative methodology seen as an alternative approach seeks to answer questions that cannot be answered through quantification, random sampling, probability testing, and other measures, which seek to control the environment of the participant. Viewed as a complementary approach to research, qualitative methodology can be utilized alongside quantitative methods, bringing a new depth and riches to data analysis.

A conceptual framework of integrity. This article reports on the findings of a qualitative study in which the construction of integrity of some business leaders was explored. Data were gathered through ten in-depth interviews with six South African business leaders commended to be champions of integrity. A grounded-theory approach to the data analysis elicited five themes. These themes and their interrelatedness are discussed in this article and a conceptual framework of integrity is proposed. Integrity is conceptualised as a multifaceted and dynamic construct based on a moral foundation and inner drive that is managed by cognitive and affective processes manifesting various integrity-related behaviours.

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning SoTL is a rich forum where scholars from different fields and philosophical orientations find space to share their research on teaching and learning in higher education. Within this paper, we will share our individual and collective experiences of why we perceive phenomenology as a methodology well-suited for a broad range of SoTL purposes. Phenomenology is a research approach that focuses on describing the common meaning of the lived experience of several individuals about a particular phenomenon.
