She is aware that her own status greatly changed over these years as she went from newlymarried grad student to established professor with child. Additionally, her accessibility was also affected by her association with American universities, and mediated by her Jordanian origins and her religion Islam. It is clear that she established close ties through her many years in the neighborhood with the same families. In this study, Ghannam examines the meaning of masculinity through several processes: growing up, marriage, finding a career, aging, and death. While these stories are told through the lives of a handful of her close interlocutors, the voices of other men, women, and children around them ring loud and clear.

It is a poem of political resistance: it calls for oppressed people to resist their oppressors, violently and bravely—even if they die in the struggle. Though the poem has most often been read as a call to resist anti-black racism, it does not limit its call for resistance to a specific kind of oppression. As a result, it has served as an inspiration to a wide variety of oppressed people around the globe as they fight for their rights and freedom. A rich ethnography of men in a low-income neighborhood in Cairo, Egypt, this book gives the reader a vivid sense of the meaning of masculinity and the multiple agents who contribute to the making of men in the Middle East. Kristin V. Monroe: "Written in lucid prose and rife with Egyptian Arabic words and phrases that are translated and explained not in endnotes but in body paragraphs, Ghannam draws chiefly on participant observations rather than interviews. Overall, this is a captivating study of working-class masculinities in Egypt and makes a significant contribution to the anthropology of the region as well as to masculinity and gender studies. Russell: "In a book that lives up to its name, anthropologist Ghannam explores what in means to be a man in the working-class neighborhood of Zawiya al-Hamra.
Watching the revolution of January , the world saw Egyptians, men and women, come together to fight for freedom and social justice. These events gave renewed urgency to the fraught topic of gender in the Middle East.
