In biology , tissue is a cellular organizational level between cells and a complete organ. A tissue is an ensemble of similar cells and their extracellular matrix from the same origin that together carry out a specific function. Organs are then formed by the functional grouping together of multiple tissues. The English word "tissue" derives from the French word "tissue", meaning that something that is "woven", from the verb tisse, "to weave".

Plant Cells and Tissues: Structure—Function Relationships

Peter R. Background The structure and function of plant roots and their interactions with soil are exciting scientific frontiers that will ultimately reveal much about our natural systems, global water and mineral and carbon cycles, and help secure food supplies into the future. This Special Issue presents a collection of papers that address topics at the forefront of our understanding of root biology. Scope These papers investigate how roots cope with drought, nutrient deficiencies, toxicities and soil compaction as well as the interactions that roots have with soil microorganisms. Roots of model plant species, annual crops and perennial species are studied in short-term experiments through to multi-year trials.

Lynch, Anna H. Last reviewed: November Aggregations of similar plant cells that perform a specific function for the plant. Plant tissue systems are the structural and functional tissue systems of plants. These tissue systems are organized into three entities: the dermal tissue system, the ground tissue system, and the vascular tissue system Fig. In general, most plants are composed of coherent masses of cells called tissues. Large units of tissues having some features in common are called tissue systems.

Learners need to be able to examine and identify some plant tissues using microscopes, bio viewers, photomicrographs and posters. Learners need to be able to draw the cells that make up the various plant tissues, showing the specialised structures. Types of plant tissues:. Plant tissues picture:. Plants are typically made up of roots, stems and leaves. Plant tissues can be broadly categorised into dividing, meristematic tissue or non-dividing, permanent tissue.

This chapter is an introduction to methods-oriented microscopy. Because the contributing authors present methods in relation to their researches, plant cell structure—function relationships as revealed by light and electron microscopies are reviewed. Much of this conceptual and terminological information is summarized in tables that are augmented with references to either photomicrographs or electron micrographs of cells and tissues. Plant Cells and Tissues: Structure—Function Relationships

Plant cells are eukaryotic cells present in green plants , photosynthetic eukaryotes of the kingdom Plantae. Their distinctive features include primary cell walls containing cellulose, hemicelluloses and pectin, the presence of plastids with the capability to perform photosynthesis and store starch, a large vacuole that regulates turgor pressure, the absence of flagella or centrioles , except in the gametes, and a unique method of cell division involving the formation of a cell plate or phragmoplast that separates the new daughter cells. Plant cells differentiate from undifferentiated meristematic cells analogous to the stem cells of animals to form the major classes of cells and tissues of roots , stems , leaves , flowers , and reproductive structures, each of which may be composed of several cell types.

Photosynthesis, storage, and secretion are functions of ground tissue. Meristematic tissues produce most of a plant's new cells. Organs The major.

Plant Tissue. (Group of cells having similar structure and function is called as tissue). Tissue Systems. There are four plant tissue systems: 1. Ground tissue.

Like animals, plants are multicellular eukaryotes whose bodies are composed of organs, tissues, and cells with highly specialized functions.
