Reflex arc

Become familiar enough with the Reflex Lab computer program how we measure reflexes in this lab that you are able to acquire and interpret the reflex data. A reflex is a response to a perturbing stimulus that acts to return the body to homeostasis. This may be subconscious as in the regulation of blood sugar by the pancreatic hormones, may be somewhat noticeable as in shivering in response to a drop in body temperature; or may be quite obvious as in stepping on a nail and immediately withdrawing your foot. A reflex arc refers to the neural pathway that a nerve impulse follows. The reflex arc typically consists of five components 3 :. The receptor at the end of a sensory neuron reacts to a stimulus. The sensory afferent neuron conducts nerve impulses along an afferent pathway towards the central nervous system CNS.

Hyperactive reflexes are commonly observed in patients with spinal cord injury SCI but there is a lack of convenient and quantitative characterizations. Patellar tendon reflexes were examined in nine SCI patients and ten healthy control subjects by tapping the tendon using a hand-held instrumented hammer at various knee flexion angles, and the tapping force, quadriceps EMG, and knee extension torque were measured to characterize patellar tendon reflexes quantitatively in terms of the tendon reflex gain , contraction rate , and reflex loop time delay. It was found that there are significant increases in and and decrease in in patients with spinal cord injury as compared to the controls. This study presented a convenient and quantitative method to evaluate reflex excitability and muscle contraction dynamics. With proper simplifications, it can potentially be used for quantitative diagnosis and outcome evaluations of hyperreflexia in clinical settings.

Unconditioned reflex

Humans and animals have reflexes to help protect them from danger. Reflexes are unconscious responses, which means they are automatic and do not require the brain to create the action. There are many different types of reflexes, but the most basic is called a simple reflex. A simple reflex contains only one space where information in the spinal cord travels between two nerve cells, called neurons. The space between two neurons is called a synapse. The first is a sensor, which senses what is happening to the body, the second is a sensory neuron to carry that information to the spinal cord, and the third is a motor neuron to transmit information away from the spinal cord to the fourth part, which is the muscle that creates an action. Doctors will test reflexes by tapping the tendon just below the knee, and this causes the leg to kick out.

The stretch reflex and the contributions of C David Marsden

Knee-jerk reflex , also called patellar reflex , sudden kicking movement of the lower leg in response to a sharp tap on the patellar tendon, which lies just below the kneecap. One of the several positions that a subject may take for the test is to sit with knees bent and with one leg crossed over the other so that the upper foot hangs clear of the floor. The sharp tap on the tendon slightly stretches the quadriceps, the complex of muscles at the front of the upper leg. In reaction these muscles contract, and the contraction tends to straighten the leg in a kicking motion.

A reflex arc is a neural pathway that controls a reflex. In vertebrates , most sensory neurons do not pass directly into the brain , but synapse in the spinal cord. This allows for faster reflex actions to occur by activating spinal motor neurons without the delay of routing signals through the brain. The brain will receive the sensory input while the reflex is being carried out and the analysis of the signal takes place after the reflex action.

In the present paper a mechanical model is described and its behaviour examined when it is subjected to units of equal and opposite forces. Most users should sign in with their email address. Posterior root-muscle PRM reflexes are short-latency spinal reflexes evoked by epidural or transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation SCS in clinical and physiological studies. PRM reflexes share key physiological characteristics with the H reflex elicited by electrical stimulation of large-diameter muscle spindle afferents in the tibial nerve. Here, we compared the H reflex and the PRM reflex of soleus in response to transcutaneous stimulation by studying their recovery cycles in ten neurologically intact volunteers and ten individuals with traumatic, chronic spinal cord injury SCI.
