Contact Angle, Wettability & Adhesion

Much interest has recently been focused on contact angles, wetting and non-wettable surfaces as is evidenced by the rapid pace and sheer number of papers published in recent years. However, in many cases there exist misconceptions and misuses of terminology, leading to misinterpretation of experimental contact angles, measurements of which deceptively appear to be simple. Terms describing contact angles, wettability, superhydrophobicity and similar other terminology are loosely used. In this contribution, key terms used in relation to contact angles are defined precisely based on the accumulative knowledge from the surface chemistry community over the last decades. The definitions provided are scientifically rigorous to avoid any ambiguity and confusion. The theoretical considerations underlying these definitions are only briefly mentioned, with references to the relevant papers.

New methodologies are a major driving force of scientific progress. The approaches, a short theoretical introduction and examples from medical applications are given. Historically there have been two approaches to complex contact angles. We showed that the solution of this inequality is an imaginary number, which we interpreted as a dynamic imaginary contact angle, for the case that the real part of the underlying complex contact angle i. This approach immediately enabled a novel analysis of hyperhydrophilic surfaces on dental implants [ 3 ], [ 4 ]. In the second approach of [ 6 ] we showed that in principle it is also possible to calculate complex contact angles from the complex surface tension of water [ 7 ]. The complex surface tension of water [ 7 ], [ 8 ] remains to be further investigated.

A review of the author's investigations of the equilibrium contact angles of pure liquids on low- and high-energy solid surfaces, both bare and covered with a condensed monomolecular adsorbed film, includes the critical surface tension of wetting and the effect of homology on spreading by pure liquids, the causes of nonspreading on high-energy surfaces, and the existence and properties of autophobic liquids and oleophobic monolayers. Constitutive relationships are summarized in a table of critical surface tensions of wetting. The theory and application of the retraction method of preparing adsorbed monolayers from solution and the conditions for mixed films are presented. Studies of the wetting behavior of solutions of various surfactants and the resultant explanation of the function of a wetting agent are generalized to include nonaqueous systems. Following estimates of the reversible work of adhesion of liquids to solids, the part played by wetting in obtaining optimum adhesion by adhesives is outlined, and a fundamental explanation is given of constitutive effects in the development of strong adhesive joints. Future areas of research on wetting and adhesion are indicated.
