His book, The Black Atlantic, is one of the pioneering works in the study of black diasporas, the spread of African blacks across the Atlantic coastline in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Caribbean, South Africa and many other nations. Gilroy focuses in particular on cultural aspects of black Atlantic identity, looking at the history of African intellectuals and the cultural construction of the idea of blackness. Gilroy is particularly focused on a critique of ethnic nationalism as excessively "essentialist" and as having the deleterious of defect as defining black and European experiences against one another. Instead, the idea of race and blackness in particular is more dynamic, differentiated and hybrid and that cultural and race theorists should look more to diversity within races than at the boundary between them.

Caribbean Studies. British Studies. To the forces of cultural nationalism hunkered down in their camps, this bold book sounds a liberating call. There is, Paul Gilroy tells us, a culture that is not specifically African, American, Caribbean, or British, but all of these at once, a black Atlantic culture whose themes and techniques transcend ethnicity and nationality to produce something new and, until now, unremarked. Challenging the practices and assumptions of cultural studies, The Black Atlantic also complicates and enriches our understanding of modernism. Debates about postmodernism have cast an unfashionable pall over questions of historical periodization.

The Black Atlantic: Modernity and Double Consciousness is a history book about a distinct black Atlantic culture that incorporated elements from African, American, British, and Caribbean cultures. The first chapter of the Black Atlantic describes the double-consciousness maintained by Africans in the diaspora. Gilroy utilizes the imagery of the slave ship to demonstrate the position of Black bodies between two or more lands, identities, cultures, etc. He highlights artistic expression particularly through music from Black diasporic communities as a means of exploring the transient nature of Blackness. Black diasporic music remains of great importance to Gilroy's narrative as it is demonstrative of the manner in which Black individuals are able to embrace a communal identity despite many individuals in the diaspora's original cultures being stolen from them. Ultimately, Gilroy asserts that the Black experience is coupled with the varied narratives relating to belonging and history, still, in many ways, the narratives are mitigated by music which allows for Black expression and community to be shared beyond borders. Gilroy's attention to "Black Europeanness" in The Black Atlantic brings up themes of double consciousness and its presence in Black Europeans.

Thanks to Krause this omission has now been rectified. Yet some questions remain. Given the prominence Krause accords republican ideologies in his study, a more rigorous analysis or deconstruction of both sides' rhetoric would have been welcome. Also, despite the author's attention to the role of women and eastern European workers in the events surrounding , we learn little of daily working-class cultures or social relations in the Homestead. Krause's overall interpretation would be strengthened if he could provide a clearer picture of how republican ideals fitted in with such a culture on a day-to-day basis.

Between and about two-thirds of the people who crossed the Atlantic to the Americas were African, and this violently brutal migration played a key role in the development of a black consciousness in the Americas and Europe.
