Our own proposal for Open Cooperatives is meant as a pragmatic antidote to this deeper tendency, it recommends making 'commons creation' a legal and structural obligation for cooperatives, so that they produce common goods even as they veer towards adaptation. Competition creates scarcity, which in turn is used to justify competitive behaviour a vicious circle.

Richard Sennett: Class and the new capitalism, craftsmanship, cooperation and cities

Co-operation is hard because it is about learning to live with people who think differently or don't know what they think at all. He is an excellent scholar and a very agile thinker He has previously won the Amalfi and Ebert prizes for sociology and in was awarded the Spinoza Prize for outstanding contributions to public debate on ethics and morality. Together forms part of a three-book project on 'homo faber, 'focusing on the skills human beings possess to make a life together;the first volume of this large project, The Craftsman, was published in Du kanske gillar. The Foreigner Richard Sennett Inbunden.

Volume 15, Issue 3 (2012)

They were members of the Communist Party although it seems likely that his mother left the party after the Hitler-Stalin pact. Interestingly, both his maternal and paternal grandparents had mixed marriages of Russian Orthodox and Russian Jewish partners. After the Revolution, they fled St Petersburg for Canada — where his paternal grandparents stayed for a while.

This book, however, is far more challenging than that; Sennett provides a deep critique of the way our societies are developing in the twenty-first century. We are losing the skills of cooperation needed to make a complex society work. Cooperation is embedded in our genes but cannot remain stuck in routine behaviour, it needs to be deepened and developed. How we talk to and communicate through gesture with one another is vital, and demands thought and effort. The analysis throughout has a strong economic emphasis and Sennett draws particularly on his detailed assessment of the job centres for the unemployed in downtown New York.

Also Available in: Cloth e-book. In this sequel to his influential work The Craftsman , Richard Sennett explores how we can learn to cooperate in the intensely tribal, competitive, and self-interested cultures we inhabit Living with people who differ—racially, ethnically, religiously, or economically—is the most urgent challenge facing civil society today. We tend socially to avoid engaging with people unlike ourselves, and modern politics encourages the politics of the tribe rather than of the city. In this thought-provoking book, Richard Sennett discusses why this has happened and what might be done about it. Sennett contends that cooperation is a craft, and the foundations for skillful cooperation lie in learning to listen well and discuss rather than debate. In Together he explores how people can cooperate online, on street corners, in schools, at work, and in local politics.
