Elemental mercury is a silver-white metal that is a heavy liquid at ambient temperatures. Due to its high surface tension, it forms small, compact spherical droplets when released.

Elemental or metallic mercury is a shiny, silver-white metal, historically referred to as quicksilver, and is liquid at room temperature. It is used in older thermometers, fluorescent light bulbs and some electrical switches. When dropped, elemental mercury breaks into smaller droplets which can go through small cracks or become strongly attached to certain materials.

Mercury is a chemical element with the symbol Hg and atomic number Mercury occurs in deposits throughout the world mostly as cinnabar mercuric sulfide. The red pigment vermilion is obtained by grinding natural cinnabar or synthetic mercuric sulfide. Mercury is used in thermometers , barometers , manometers , sphygmomanometers , float valves , mercury switches , mercury relays , fluorescent lamps and other devices, though concerns about the element's toxicity have led to mercury thermometers and sphygmomanometers being largely phased out in clinical environments in favor of alternatives such as alcohol - or galinstan -filled glass thermometers and thermistor - or infrared -based electronic instruments. Likewise, mechanical pressure gauges and electronic strain gauge sensors have replaced mercury sphygmomanometers.

T HIS chapter presents background information that serves as a foundation for understanding the toxicology of MeHg. The chemical, toxicokinetic, and toxicodynamic properties of MeHg are presented. There is extensive literature on MeHg, and this review is not meant to be exhaustive. Although the primary emphasis of this report is on MeHg, this chapter includes discussions of other Hg species to provide a general review of the sources of exposure and toxicological properties of different Hg species.

Mercury Hg , also called quicksilver , chemical element , liquid metal of Group 12 IIb, or zinc group of the periodic table. Mercury was known in Egypt and also probably in the East as early as bce. Mercury is the only elemental metal that is liquid at room temperature. Cesium melts at about It boils at

Like cadmium, zinc and lead, mercury is a naturally occurring element known as a "heavy metal" and can be toxic to living organisms. The element's atomic mass is Mercury has a melting point of Droplets of liquid mercury are shiny and silver-white with a high surface tension, appearing rounded when on flat surfaces. The liquid is highly mobile and droplets combine easily due to low viscosity. The element also combines with other metals such as tin, copper, gold and silver to form mercury alloys known as amalgams. Fortunately, mercury does not form amalgam with iron, which allows for the element to be shipped in standard iron flasks containing 76 pounds, or

7.6: Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids

An element is the simplest form of matter that cannot be split into simpler substances or built from simpler substances by any ordinary chemical or physical method. There are elements known to us, out of which 92 are naturally occurring, while the rest have been prepared artificially. Elements are further classified into metals, non-metals, and metalloids based on their properties, which are correlated with their placement in the periodic table. With the exception of hydrogen, all elements that form positive ions by losing electrons during chemical reactions are called metals.

The element's atomic mass is grams per mole and its specific gravity is times that of water. Mercury has a melting point of oC, a boiling point of oC, and is the only metal to remain in liquid form at room temperature. Elemental mercury (Hg0) has no electric charge.
