The British administrators could not understand the cultural pluralism of the Indian people and their sense of accommodation and adjustment with different religions and communities. For instance, when the respondents returned the information that they are Hindu-Muslim or Hindu-Sikh the British were at a loss. How could one be both? The imperial rulers also could not understand the meaning of nomadism, for instance, which was a way of life with a large number of communities in India and outside.
