We explore electromagnetic wave properties and the electromagnetic spectrum. The wave nature and particle nature of light are compared.

Segment F: Electromagnetic Wave Properties

Waves can be divided using several methods. And one such method of differentiating it is by the means of the medium in which they travel. As per the medium, the waves can be differentiated as mechanical and electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic waves are waves that have no medium to travel whereas mechanical waves need a medium for its transmission. Electromagnetic waves travel in a vacuum whereas mechanical waves do not.

Waves come in many shapes and forms. While all waves share some basic characteristic properties and behaviors, some waves can be distinguished from others based on some observable and some non-observable characteristics. It is common to categorize waves based on these distinguishing characteristics. Longitudinal versus Transverse Waves versus Surface Waves. One way to categorize waves is on the basis of the direction of movement of the individual particles of the medium relative to the direction that the waves travel.

Difference Between Mechanical and Electromagnetic Waves

In physics , mathematics , and related fields, a wave is a propagating dynamic disturbance change from equilibrium of one or more quantities, sometimes as described by a wave equation. In physical waves, at least two field quantities in the wave medium are involved. Waves can be periodic, in which case those quantities oscillate repeatedly about an equilibrium resting value at some frequency. When the entire waveform moves in one direction it is said to be a traveling wave ; by contrast, a pair of superimposed periodic waves traveling in opposite directions makes a standing wave. In a standing wave, the amplitude of vibration has nulls at some positions where the wave amplitude appears smaller or even zero. The types of waves most commonly studied in classical physics are mechanical and electromagnetic. In a mechanical wave, stress and strain fields oscillate about a mechanical equilibrium.

Electromagnetic Waves

The electromagnetic spectrum is the range of frequencies the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation and their respective wavelengths and photon energies.. Electromagnetic Waves Basic idea of displacement current, Electromagnetic waves, their characteristics, their Transverse nature qualitative ideas only. These waves propagate in vacuum with speed c. In principle, electromagnetic spectrum extends over an infinite range of frequency.

Geosynchronous satellite is placed in the geosynchronous orbit with an orbital period matching the Earth's rotation period. These satellites take 24 hours to complete one rotation around the earth. However, the orbital plane for a typical geosynchronous satellite is generally not the equatorial plane. The communication platforms based on the communication with the help of these satellites are know. Cryogenics is the study of the production and behaviour of materials at extremely low temperatures below degree Centigrade to lift and place the heavier objects in space.

Energy, a measure of the ability to do work, comes in many forms and can transform from one type to another. Examples of stored or potential energy include batteries and water behind a dam. Objects in motion are examples of kinetic energy. Charged particles—such as electrons and protons—create electromagnetic fields when they move, and these fields transport the type of energy we call electromagnetic radiation, or light.

Categories of Waves

Named after esteemed physicist James Clerk Maxwell, the equations describe the creation and propagation of electric and magnetic fields. Fundamentally, they describe how electric charges and currents create electric and magnetic fields, and how they affect each other.

 - Танкадо отдал кольцо с умыслом. Мне все равно, думал ли он, что тучный господин побежит к телефону-автомату и позвонит нам, или просто хотел избавиться от этого кольца. Я принял решение. Мы вводим эту цитату.

Wave speed depends on the type of medium. 1. Mechanical waves- travel faster in solids & slowest in gases. 2. Electromagnetic waves- travel fastest in empty.
