He has travelled widely in rural India and done fieldwork of a kind that few economists have attempted. In Senseand Solidarity Drze offers unique insight on issues of hunger, inequality, conflict, and the evolution of social policy in India over roughly the past two decades.

September 29, He works in a space that is widely but incorrectly ignored by most. The practical implications of evidence-based economics cannot be worked through without engaging all of society in democratic discussion, including especially those who are working for change. Economics itself fails without that engagement. Read on! Historic legislations and initiatives of the period, relating for instance to the right to food and the right to work, are all scrutinised and explained, as are the fierce debates that often accompanied them.

The last twenty years have been a time of intense public debates on social policy in India. There have also been major initiatives, such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, as well as resilient inertia in some fields. The essays span the gamut of critical social policies, from education and health to poverty, nutrition, child care, corruption, employment, and social security. There are also less predictable topics such as the caste system, corporate po

As its title suggest, it makes a passionate and well-reasoned case for a 'jholawala' — humanitarian — approach to economics. In the context of social development, he looks at various qualitative indicators of child health, elementary education and gender equality and broadens the same to include aspects such as the abolition of caste, the progress of ethics and social norms among others. The book looks to understand these various parameters of social development through the lens of the various welfare schemes that were developed by the Government from the PDS to the mid-day meal schemes to the more recent NREGA. He traces the journey of these schemes from the various efforts made by successive governments in the provision of these schemes, some of which have now become laws, to the important role played by them in ensuring some basic rights to the poor, the problems of corruption plaguing them and efforts being made to either dismantle them or privatise them. From the attempts to dismantle the Public Distribution Scheme to reducing the fund allocation to NREGA or the ridiculous attempt to substitute hot cooked mid-day meals with Parle-G biscuits, he looks at the present attempts to break this welfare state.

Fler böcker av Jean Dreze
